SUMMER FLAVORS: SALT & STRAW

Shooting for Salt & Straw, the wackiest, most inventive ice creamery in Portland, is such a treat each season! Every few months, I get to try out ideas, bring in new talent (such as our model seen above, the ravishing ms. Emily Katz) and stick my fingers in a bunch of VERY tasty pints of exotic ice cream flavors.
This month proved to be the most exciting shoot yet -- highlighting all the upcoming flavors for Summer and late Spring. Such titalating combinations such as rhubarb, saffron & champagne, carrot & watermelon sorbet, black raspberry cucumber, strawberry lime cheesecake and my personal favorite: birthday cake flavor with swirls of vanilla frosting, blackberries, sprinkles and yellow cake. Oh baby!!! Getting to work with friends in the creative field is really what it's all about -- this shoot involved one of my favorite prop/food stylists: Anne Parker -- do yourself and favor, pop over to this gal's site and get ready to be transported to a world where organization meets chaos, the natural meets the unnatural and fun reigns. Anne's such a great collaborator!

And new to me, to make this shoot really pop for summer, was incorporating flowers. These heavenly blossoms and arrangements were made by Hilary Horvath -- I first fell in love with Hilary's work at the counter within Alder & Co. and her bouquets were just the right layer to make you fall in love with these summery images. I am so in love with flowers now, I'm not sure I'd ever attempt a food story without them!

For more information, visit Salt & Straw's site. If you are in the Portland area or near Joan's on 3rd in Los Angeles, get in line for the most velvety, creamy, locally made/sourced ice cream on the west coast.

  1. This is my kind of lookbook. How stunning!! I am extra excited for the birthday cake flavor. My husband and I were just having a conversation a few days ago that the only thing that would make Salt & Straw better is a birthday cake flavor...

  2. Love how you've captured the feel of Salt & Straw! Now if only their lines weren't so long...
